Energy Initiative with Africa

After the Oruç Reis Research Ship started seismic exploration in Somalia in the east of Africa, an agreement was signed with Senegal in the west of the continent. With the agreement, Türkiye and Senegal will cooperate in the fields of energy, oil and natural gas.

Energy Diplomacy

Türkiye has intensified its energy diplomacy with African countries in the last year. Strategic agreements were reached with Niger, Egypt, Somalia, Morocco and Algeria on energy and mining. The last link of Turkish initiatives in the field of energy in Africa was Senegal.

 

Signatures Signed at the Presidential Complex

During the official visit of Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye to Ankara at the invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, many agreements were signed between the two countries. In this context, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar and Senegalese Foreign Minister Yassine Fall signed the ‘Memorandum of Understanding on Energy and Hydrocarbons between the Government of the Republic of Türkiye and the Government of the Republic of Senegal’.

 

Support for Seismic Exploration

Sharing a post on his social media account regarding the agreement, Bayraktar said, ‘With the “Memorandum of Understanding on Energy and Hydrocarbons” signed with Senegalese Foreign Minister Mr Yassine Fall, our countries will cooperate in oil and natural gas exploration, production and trade. In this context, Türkiye will contribute to seismic exploration activities in onshore and offshore areas in Senegal. In addition, co-operation will be established in the fields of renewable energy, energy efficiency, critical minerals and rare earth elements.’
