Minister Bayraktar spoke at the panel titled "Nuclear Energy: The Power That Protects the Climate, Brings Nations Together, Guides Humanity" within the scope of the Russian Energy Week held in Moscow.

Triple the demand

Bayraktar stated that Türkiye's electricity demand will triple in 30 years and said, "The annual consumption, which is 350 terawatt hours today, will exceed a thousand terawatt hours in 2055. Moreover, an increase beyond this is expected," he said.

Renewable Energy

Stating that energy supply should be diversified to meet the increasing demand, Bayraktar said, "We are developing an energy policy that covers all resources. But we also have a climate goal. Turkiye will be a carbon neutral economy in 2053. In this process, oil, natural gas and domestic coal are needed for a certain period of time. But in the long run, renewable energy will be at the center of this transformation," he said.

Ambitious Target

Underlining that nuclear energy plays a key role as a clean and sustainable base load in Türkiye’s energy strategy, Bayraktar said, "Nuclear energy is an emission-free source that provides uninterrupted production. Therefore, our goal is ambitious, to create a nuclear-installed power of 20 gigawatt by 2050," he said.

5 Gigawatt SMR

Reminding that the construction process of 4 reactors in Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant continues, Bayraktar said that they are planning 8 new large-scale reactors in Sinop and Thrace, and that they are also targeting small modular reactors (SMR) of at least 5 gigawats.

15 percent from nuclear

Bayraktar stated that Rosatom supports Türkiye's nuclear energy goals and explained that with these investments, the country will be able to meet at least 15 percent of its electricity needs in the 2050s from nuclear, which is critical in terms of supply security, sustainability and competitiveness.

Will Facilitate

Stating that the industrial facilities have adapted to nuclear standards with Akkuyu, Bayraktar pointed out that the localization rate in Akkuyu has exceeded 50 percent today and said, "This experience will make it easier for Türkiye to implement its second and third nuclear projects. It will also pave the way for the participation of Turkish companies in projects in countries such as Egypt and Hungary," he said.

Nuclear Ambassador

Bayraktar underlined that qualified human resources are as important as investments for the realization of nuclear targets and said, "For this purpose, we have sent many young and talented students to Russia. They completed their education and started working in Akkuyu. Hundreds of young people have become ambassadors who explain why we need nuclear energy," he said.

Strategic Importance

Pointing out that the partnership with Rosatom is of strategic importance, Bayraktar said, "This cooperation will carry us to the 22nd century. Because nuclear power plants have a life of 60 years. When another 20 years are added, this technology will take us to the next century. I hope we will reach that future with a stronger and more sustainable energy vision," he said.

Research Reactor

Bayraktar emphasized that nuclear energy adds value not only to electricity production but also to different sectors, "We want to reactivate our research reactors. Maybe we can build another research reactor with Rosatom. All this will support our development in terms of innovation and technology," he said.

High-Level Interviews

Minister Bayraktar held meetings with many high-ranking names in Moscow, where he was for the Russian Energy Week. Minister Bayraktar, who met with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, Vietnam Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Energy Abdulaziz Bin Salman Al Saud, President of Gazprom Aleksey Miller and Rosatom General Manager AlekseyL Likhachev, discussed cooperation opportunities in the fields of energy and mining.
