Turkish Energy in the Horn of Africa

Increasing its regional and global effectiveness in the field of energy, Türkiye is making successive moves in the Horn of Africa, a strategic location. While Çağrı Bey Deep Sea Drilling Ship is on its way to Somalia to search for oil, a cooperation agreement in the field of energy was signed with Somalia's neighbor Ethiopia.

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar stated that they aim to produce concrete projects with Ethiopia and said, "We have agreed on a comprehensive roadmap that will deepen our current cooperation and embody new partnership areas."

 

After 11 Years

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan paid an official visit to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, at the invitation of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. President Erdoğan, who went to Ethiopia after an 11-year break, first visited the Adva Victory Monument.

 

Signing Agreements

After the official welcoming ceremony held at the National Palace, one-on-one and inter-delegation meetings were held. Later, the signing ceremony of the agreements was held with President Erdoğan accompanied by Ethiopian Prime Minister Ali.

 

Cooperation in Energy

In this context, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, who was on President Erdoğan's delegation, and Ethiopian Minister of Water and Energy Habtamu İtefa signed the 'Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Energy'.

 

Renewable Energy

Accordingly, the two countries will develop joint projects in the fields of electricity, renewable energy and energy efficiency. It will cooperate for the production and installation of hydroelectric power plant equipment and electric turbines.

 

Investments Will Be Supported

Investments in the energy infrastructure projects of public institutions and private companies, especially in the electricity production, transmission and distribution sectors, will be supported. Information and experience transfer will be provided between relevant institutions.

 

New Deals

9th Türkiye-Ethiopia Joint Economic Commission took place during President Erdoğan's visit to Ethiopia. Co-presidents of the Joint Economic Commission, Minister Bayraktar and Ethiopian Minister of Finance Ahmed Shide signed the JEC minutes.

 

One Billion Dollar Target

With the minutes, the common goal of reaching a trade volume between the two countries to one billion dollars on the basis of common benefit and win-win principles was confirmed. It was emphasized that Türkiye was one of the first countries to complete negotiations with Ethiopia within the scope of Ethiopia's accession negotiations with the World Trade Organization.

 

New Opportunities

Within the framework of the signed report, the two countries will work to deepen a wide range of existing cooperation areas, especially in areas such as agriculture, education, health, energy and mining, environment and urbanism, transportation, culture and tourism, and to identify new cooperation opportunities. It will also take concrete steps to improve the investment environment, increase the contact between the private sectors and strengthen cooperation in the field of customs.

 

Minister Bayraktar, while sharing on social media about Ethiopian contacts, noted the following:

CONCRETE PROJECTS: Within the scope of the Addis Ababa visit, we attended the inter-delegation meeting chaired by our President Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Ethiopian Prime Minister Mr. Abiy Ahmed Ali. Within the scope of the talks, we signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Energy. We aim to produce concrete projects by strengthening the sharing of experience in a wide range from electricity production to grid infrastructure, from renewable energy investments to hydroelectric infrastructure works.

COMPREHENSIVE ROAD MAP: In addition to the 9th Türkiye–Ethiopia Joint Economic Commission. We signed the Minutes of the Term Meeting together with the Ethiopian Minister of Finance Mr. Ahmed Shide as the Co-Chairman of the Turkish Side. From energy and mining to education, from health to transportation and agriculture; to environment, urbanism, culture and tourism, we have agreed on a comprehensive road map that will deepen our existing cooperation and embody new partnership areas.
