Minister Bayraktar visited France on the sidelines of the 2nd Nuclear Energy Summit.
Speaking at the opening session of the event held in Paris, Minister Bayraktar shared Türkiye's vision in the field of energy with his counterparts.

Comprehensive Cooperation
Minister Bayraktar said, “Recent developments have shown us once again how dependent we are on oil and natural gas and how this creates enormous vulnerability in economic growth.” Pointing out that the world is going through a turbulent period, Minister Bayraktar said, “Political consistency, resource diversity, and more comprehensive international cooperation are essential to successfully navigate this turbulent period.”

Nuclear Energy Plays a Critical Role
Noting that Türkiye's electricity demand continues to grow, as it does in global markets, and that this demand is expected to triple by the middle of the century, Minister Bayraktar recalled President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's announcement of the 2053 net zero emissions target, stating, "While rapidly increasing the share of renewable energy in our system, we are also aware of the importance of a reliable and resilient grid, and nuclear energy plays a critical role in achieving this balance."

Target: 20 GW Nuclear Capacity
Minister Bayraktar also stated that Türkiye's long-term nuclear vision is clear, saying, "We aim to reach 20 GW of nuclear installed capacity by 2053, at least 5 GW of which will come from Small Modular Reactors (SMR). The first nuclear power plant is expected to become operational by the end of this year. This will be an important milestone for Türkiye and the beginning of a new era."

Nuclear Renaissance
Minister Bayraktar said, "Whether it's large power plants or SMRs, expanding nuclear capacity on a large scale will require strong political will and determination, robust safety and security regulations, human resource development programs, and solid financing structures. We must encourage international financial institutions, export credit agencies, and private investors to participate in this upcoming nuclear renaissance. We must find new ways of doing business and create attractive models."

COP31: An Important Opportunity
Minister Bayraktar also emphasized that Türkiye will host the 2026 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31) in Antalya in November, saying, “We believe this conference will present an important opportunity to advance international cooperation on energy transition, climate, and clean energy technologies.”
